The Hot and the Cold of It

After traveling to Phoenix AZ from Michigan I noticed some things.  As I explored the surrounding area of the city, there was a shock to my system. What was the shock?  It happened during my first few steps as I walked out of the airport. As the hot 80° air surrounded me, I looked at my watch in disbelief that it can be this warm at 10:00 pm.

This shock led me to thinking about the impact that hot and cold environments can have on a system. For instance, a spring’s performance can be significantly impacted by elevated temperatures.

The process of manufacturing springs does generate heat and in addition, there is heat applied to stress relief after the coiling process. Heat is a natural part of the manufacturing process, but it is important to know the impact and at what point temperatures can negatively impact a spring’s performance.
