At Apex, we are set up to customize your project for your unique needs. Sometimes this means building a tool for a stamping product. So, to help you better understand the partnership when trusting Apex with your tooling, we put together some of the most frequently asked questions regarding tools built at Apex.
Are the tools built ONSITE?
Yes, we build tools on site here in our main plant for all the machines we run in house.
What are the different types of tooling used at Apex in metal stamping?
Apex approaches all tooling from the standpoint of quality first. With that we can make tools for a variety of end goals in mind. All depending on your project. We can make progressive dies, ranging in size from 8 – 95 inches in length. We also create four-slide tooling, secondary tooling, and soft tooling for prototyping purposes. We determine the best process for each customer’s cost, timeline, and overall project needs. Every tool is customized accordingly.
What is the process of creating tooling?
With any project that includes tooling at Apex we start with CAD design and calculations to iron out all the details. We then move on to wire EDM and precision machining. In the process we always work to balance cost, speed, quality and durability in the design. We also can’t stress enough the importance of close collaboration between the customer, engineers, and toolmakers. Bringing us to a major benefit of having tooling in house at Apex. Under the same room we work closely to ensure the best tool possible.
What are typical lead times for tooling and part production?
Lead times are completely dependent on project needs. On average we see 8-14 weeks, but shorter times frames are possible in some situations. In addition a quality design will always support timely tooling.
What is tool maintenance and why is it important?
Maintaining tools properly is non-negotiable. It ensures tools remain production ready for years to come. At Apex we understand that and we make it a priority to include tool maintenance. We understand this at Apex that’s why maintenance is always included with tool purchases!

How long does a tool last?
Tools can last indefinitely when properly built and maintained. 10mil+ hits guaranteed for Apex built tools. Other factors can affect tool life. Reminder: ongoing maintenance at Apex is provided at no cost to the customer.
Can existing tooling be modified for design changes?
The short answer is yes, sometimes. Modifications are possible because we design most of our tooling with inserts so we can make changes more efficiently and cost effectively. Although occasionally new tooling is required depending on the changes.
How does Apex handle tooling for prototype parts?
Apex does build prototype dies for fit/function testing when costing makes sense and depending on other project factors.
Who owns the tool after it’s built?
Depending on the preferences of the customer, Apex customers most often hold ownership of their tools. In addition, storage and maintenance are included with tool cost until the end of the program.
